Moving a piano or a grand piano rarely tops a relocation checklist, but it should. Both instruments are heavy, top-heavy and mechanically sensitive, and the wrong tilt angle or a knock can damage the action, the strings or the case. Being prepared brings the instrument safely to its new home and avoids costly repairs afterwards.
This guide walks through the key steps, from choosing a specialised carrier to preparing the old location and acclimatising and tuning the instrument at the new one.
01Why moving a piano or grand piano takes experience
An upright piano usually weighs 200 to 300 kilograms, a grand piano 250 to over 500 kilograms depending on size. Both have an awkward, high centre of gravity and an action built from thousands of moving parts that reacts sensitively to knocks and steep tilts. A grand piano usually needs to be tipped onto its side for transport; getting the angle and the securing right decides whether the action and the lid stay undamaged.
Specialist piano movers work with lifting straps, dollies and transport blankets built for exactly these requirements, and know the critical angles for stairwells and narrow passages. That is the main reason moving an instrument differs from an ordinary furniture move.
02Before the move: access, dimensions and securing
Before the appointment, it pays to measure the access routes at both the old and the new location precisely: door widths, stairwell turns, lift dimensions. For a grand piano on an upper floor without a suitable lift, transport via balcony or window using a crane or hoist may be needed; the mover will confirm this during a pre-move survey.
On the instrument itself, the lid should be closed and secured, the pedal mechanism locked, and loose parts such as the music desk or candle holders removed and packed separately. Doing this before the movers arrive shortens the job and reduces the risk of scratches and jams.
03Climate acclimatisation at the new location
The wood, soundboard and strings of a piano respond to changes in temperature and humidity, and a move almost always means a change of indoor climate. After transport the instrument needs time to adjust to the new conditions before it is tuned; two to four weeks is a common guideline.
At the new location, avoid placing the instrument directly next to radiators, fireplaces or windows in direct sunlight, and aim for a relative humidity between 45 and 60 percent. A Hygrometer mit Kunststoffgehäuse Analog mounted near the instrument makes that value visible and shows whether a humidifier or dehumidifier would help.

04Tuning after the move
Even a short move within the same city shifts string tension because of the transport angle and the new climate. After the acclimatisation period, a piano tuner should retune the instrument; tuning too early only drifts again while the wood and strings are still settling.
Owners who have their instrument tuned regularly already know the routine; after a move, this appointment is not optional, it belongs on the list.
05Insurance and floor protection
Before the move, it is worth checking home contents or removals insurance: does the policy cover transport damage to a valuable instrument, or is additional cover through the mover needed? This question is best clarified in advance with the insurer and the mover, not after damage has already occurred.
At the new location, a Pianocarpet Klavier Teppich - Isolierteppich protects both the floor from caster marks and neighbours from impact-sound transmission on sensitive floors. Our Klaviere category gives an overview of current pianos and grand pianos.

Measuring access routes in advance, leaving the transport to an experienced mover, and giving the instrument time to acclimatise after the move brings a piano or grand piano safely to its new home. Tuning, floor protection and the insurance question round out the preparation.
