A child’s guitar size cannot be chosen by age or height alone. Compare the scale length and check that the player can reach the first frets in a relaxed posture.
The table lists scale lengths and size labels for specific models.
| Model | Scale / size |
|---|---|
| La Mancha Rubi CM/53 | 530 mm / 1/2 |
| La Mancha Rubi CM/59 | 590 mm / 3/4 |
| La Mancha Rubi CM/63-N | 630 mm / 7/8 |
| Alhambra 1 C HT | 610 mm / 3/4 |
01Height is a starting point
La Mancha also gives height guidance for its Rubi range, such as about 1.47 m for the CM/53. This applies to that range; arm length, hand size and posture can vary. Check that the child can reach the first frets comfortably on the specific guitar.
02Check arm, hand and seated posture
Have the child sit upright and hold the guitar steadily. They should reach the first frets without leaning forward, raising a shoulder or sharply bending the wrist. Repeat the check with a shorter or longer scale. Also make sure the body sits securely and the fretting arm stays relaxed.
03Compare size labels with model measurements
Labels such as 1/2, 3/4 and 7/8 are not identical measurements across all makers. La Mancha lists 530 mm for the Rubi CM/53, 590 mm for the CM/59 and 630 mm for the CM/63-N. Alhambra lists 610 mm for the 1 C HT 3/4. Compare the specific scale and the player’s fit rather than inferring size from the fraction alone.
04Classical or steel-string acoustic?
The child-size options in this guide are classical guitars with nylon strings. On a classical guitar, the treble strings are nylon; the wound bass strings typically have a nylon core. A steel-string acoustic is a different construction, usually designed for steel strings. Choose the instrument type for the musical goal first, then compare sizes. Do not simply swap string types to turn a classical guitar into a steel-string model.
05Choose by the instrument’s fit
The La Mancha Rubi CM/53 is a 1/2-size example with a 530 mm scale and 48 mm nut width. The CM/59 has a 590 mm scale in 3/4, while the CM/63-N has 630 mm in 7/8. The Alhambra 1 C HT 3/4 is another example at 610 mm, with a solid cedar top. These are specifications, not a ranking. Check posture and reach on the specific instrument.
Use height as an initial clue, then compare the specific model’s scale and check that the child can reach the first frets in a relaxed seated position.
