Martin X-Series and HPL explained: composite instead of solid wood

Scroll through Martin's model names for long enough and you will run into the abbreviation HPL, for High Pressure Laminate. It gets confused with the Road Series, Martin's mid-range line that includes models like the DE-RM Retro Mahogany Series. In fact it's the other way round: the Road Series is built entirely from solid wood, while HPL is used in the X-Series, Martin's entry-level and travel line.

This guide explains what HPL is as a material, where Martin uses it, how it compares to solid wood in tone and care, and which construction suits which player.

01What is HPL (High Pressure Laminate)?

HPL is made from several layers of paper pressed together with resin under high pressure; the top layer carries a wood-pattern decor, such as cocobolo or Brazilian rosewood. It is not a real wood veneer but a composite material, produced under FSC certification at Martin.

The advantage: HPL is far less sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity than solid wood, which is why it suits travel and entry-level instruments that get carried around more and are not always kept in a climate-controlled space.

02The X-Series: where Martin uses HPL

On Martin's X-Series, the back and sides are made from HPL, while the top - the part that matters most for tone - stays solid spruce on most models. The Martin Guitars 00-X2E, Cocobolo, Fichte massiv Remastered - inklusive Softcase shows the cocobolo decor on an HPL body with a solid spruce top, and the Martin Guitars 000-X2E, Brazilian Rosewood, Remastered, Fichte massiv - inklusive Softcase the Brazilian rosewood decor in the slightly larger 000 body shape. Both come fitted with a pickup.

03Road Series: where solid wood begins at Martin

Despite what the name might suggest, the Road Series is not a composite line - it is Martin's entry into all-solid construction above the X-Series: top, back and sides are all made from solid wood. The MARTIN DE-RM Retro Mahogany Series vollmassive Fichte und Mahagoni pairs a solid spruce top with a solid mahogany body, with no composite material at all.

Choosing between the X-Series and the Road Series is therefore not a choice between two HPL variants, but between a composite body and a fully solid one.

04Tone, care and everyday use compared

The two constructions behave differently over time. The table below sums up the key differences.

HPL (X-Series) compared to solid wood (Road Series and above)
FeatureHPL body (X-Series)Solid wood (Road Series and up)
Back/side materialpaper-and-resin compositesolid tonewood (e.g. mahogany, sapele, walnut)
Climate sensitivitylow - travels without much worryhigher - stable humidity matters
Tonal change over yearsstays largely constantcan open up and mature with play
Typical usetravel, entry level, frequent transporthome use, long-term tonal development

05Which construction suits which player

Anyone who takes a guitar on the road often, transports it frequently, or keeps it somewhere without steady humidity control benefits from the durability of the X-Series. Anyone looking for a home instrument whose tone develops over the years, where that gradual opening up is part of the appeal, will find the more fitting entry into all-solid wood in the Road Series and the ranges above it. Our full range of acoustic guitars is available in the Westerngitarren category.

HPL and solid wood are two different constructions, each with its own strengths: HPL makes the X-Series durable and travel-ready, while solid wood makes the Road Series and the ranges above it instruments that open up over the years. Which construction fits depends on how and where the guitar gets played.

Frequently asked questions

Is HPL lower quality than solid wood?
No, it's a different material with different properties: HPL back and sides hold up better against climate swings, while solid wood can open up tonally over the years. The top is solid spruce on most X-Series models regardless.
What exactly is HPL made of?
HPL is made from several layers of paper pressed together with resin under high pressure; the top layer carries a wood-pattern decor. At Martin, HPL is produced under FSC certification.
Is the Road Series a composite line?
No. The Road Series is built entirely from solid wood - top, back and sides. HPL is used in the line below it, the X-Series.
Does an HPL body need less care than solid wood?
An HPL body is less sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, but that doesn't replace basic care such as changing strings or storing the instrument properly.
