Trumpet Care: Valve Oil, Cleaning and Proper Storage

La Tromba T2 Ventilöl extra dünn - Musik-Ebert Gmbh

Caring for a trumpet does not mean hours of polishing, just a few small habits done regularly. Keeping the valves oiled, the slides greased and the leadpipe clean makes playing smoother, lasts longer and protects the value of the instrument.

This guide walks through the key care steps for trumpet and cornet, the right products and sensible intervals. Everything here is something you can do at home.

01Valve oil: applying it regularly and correctly

The single most important product in trumpet care is valve oil. Dry pistons get sluggish and wear faster. Oil regularly, every few days with daily playing, or at the latest when the valves no longer spring back cleanly.

How to do it: unscrew the valve cap, lift the piston part way out, apply two or three drops of oil to the bare surface, reseat the piston, close the cap and pump a few times so the oil spreads. Mind the guide so the piston seats correctly.

On viscosity: extra thin oil flows fast and suits well played, tight valves, while a slightly thicker oil lasts longer and is the calmer choice for older or slightly worn valves. A proven all rounder is La Tromba T2 Ventilöl extra dünn.

02Greasing the slides: tuning and valve slides

The tuning slides need grease, not oil. The right slide grease keeps them moving freely while sealing well. Apply a small, thin amount to the bare slide surface, work the slide back and forth a few times and wipe off any excess.

The same grease keeps the cork on the water keys supple so it does not dry out. A handy product for this is La Tromba® Zug- und Zapfenfett / Korkfett. Too much grease attracts dust, so go thin and reapply more often.

03Leadpipe and interior cleaning

Over time saliva and mineral residue build up inside the leadpipe, which affects tone and response. Run a cleaning brush or a flexible snake through the leadpipe and tuning slides regularly.

For a thorough interior clean there are kits that combine brushes with a cleaning agent, such as the Reka Cleaning Set für Trompete, Cornet, Flügelhorn. Once or twice a year a full cleaning bath makes sense: remove valves and slides, rinse the instrument in lukewarm water with a mild agent, brush the tubes, dry well, then re oil and re grease. Never use hot water, it can damage the lacquer.

04Cleaning the mouthpiece and wiping the exterior

The mouthpiece sees the most contact and should stay clean. With a mouthpiece brush like the Slide O-Mix Mundstückbürste you remove deposits in the bore and cup under lukewarm water.

On the outside, a soft, lint free cloth is enough to wipe off fingerprints and moisture after each session. That protects the finish and keeps silver plated or lacquered instruments looking good longer. Use special polishes sparingly and only the ones matched to your finish.

05Storing it right: case, not radiator

After playing, the trumpet belongs in its case, not left out on a stand overnight. The case protects against dust, knocks and temperature swings.

Location matters: not right by the radiator, not in a damp cellar and not in a hot car. Dry the instrument after playing by releasing the condensation through the water keys before packing it away. That avoids moisture in the case, which encourages corrosion. The right case and all care products are in Trompeten - Zubehör.

Trumpet care is routine, not science: oil, grease, brush, wipe and store it clean. Doing this in small steps regularly saves bigger clean ups and keeps the instrument smooth for years. If you are just starting out or upgrading, a solid trumpet like the Bach Trompete TR450 is a reliable companion.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I oil the valves?
Every few days with daily playing, or at the latest when the pistons no longer spring back cleanly. Two or three drops on the bare piston surface are enough.
What is the difference between valve oil and slide grease?
Valve oil is thin and keeps the fast moving pistons smooth. Slide grease is thicker, it maintains the tuning slides and seals them. Both belong in every trumpet case.
Which valve oil is right, thin or thick?
Extra thin oil suits well played, tight valves and flows very freely. A slightly thicker oil lasts longer and is the calmer choice for older or slightly worn valves.
How do I clean the leadpipe from the inside?
With a cleaning brush or flexible snake under lukewarm water. Once or twice a year a full cleaning bath with brush and a mild agent is worthwhile, followed by fresh oiling and greasing.
Where is the best place to store the trumpet?
In its closed case in a dry, temperate spot. Not by the radiator, not in a damp cellar, not in a hot car. Release the condensation and dry the instrument first.
